During the turbulent era of the Bakumatsu, there was a notorious assassin known as the Hitokiri Battousai. His ferociousness and exceptional abilities earned him a legendary status in the Restoration period. However, as the era of violence drew to a close, he disappeared without a trace, only to reappear eleven years later as Himura Kenshin, a wandering swordsman. He takes refuge in a kenjutsu dojo run by a fierce woman named Kamiya Kaoru and forms bonds with new companions like the street fighter Sagara Sanosuke, ex-samurai's son Myoujin Yahiko, and shrewd doctor Takani Megumi. Kenshin vows to defend the helpless without the use of deadly force to atone for the lives he's taken. But, this promise is soon tested, and his dark past comes back to haunt him and those closest to him.
