Biography

In 1979, Bay and other members of the "Original Six," a group of women directors, established the Women’s Steering Committee of the Director’s Guild of America to combat gender discrimination in Hollywood and promote female employment in directing roles on film and television sets.

Bay serves on the board of directors for the Foundation for National Progress, the publisher of Mother Jones magazine.

In 2007, Bay directed the American premiere of Shakespeare's Will, a solo play by Vern Thiessen starring Jeanmarie Simpson as Anne Hathaway.

She appeared in the 2009 film Mother and Child.

Bay is related to Rabbi John Rosove of Temple Israel of Hollywood and film director Michael Bay.

Bay was married to actor John Schuck, with whom she had a son named Aaron. They divorced in 1983. After Leonard Nimoy's 1987 divorce from Sandra Zober, he married Bay over a year later. In 1999, Bay and Nimoy donated $100,000 to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) to acquire Nan Goldin's The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. They also supported the 2007 MOCA exhibition WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution and contributed $1 million in 2008 to establish The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater at Griffith Observatory.

Bay appeared as a model in Nimoy's Shekhina, a book featuring monochrome nude photographs of women embodying Shekhinah, the divine presence in Judaism. She and Nimoy remained together until his passing in February 2015 in California.
