Biography
Tommy Hilfiger was raised as the second oldest of nine siblings in an Irish Catholic family in Elmira, a small town near Cornell University. His father worked as a watchmaker, while his mother was a nurse. In 1969, Hilfiger purchased jeans for $150 and sold them to local youths, completing the deal swiftly. Encouraged by this initial success, he continued on this path. Using the profits saved, Hilfiger opened his first store in 1969, named the "People Store," offering trendy fashion for students. The business thrived, leading to the opening of additional branches. Soon, Hilfiger was managing a total of ten fashion stores. With increasing sales, he began producing pants under his own label by the mid-1970s.
In 1979, he sold his store chain to focus entirely on fashion design. Despite lacking formal fashion training, Hilfiger embarked on a career as a self-employed fashion designer. In 1984, he launched his first collection featuring sporty clothing with a classic American style. This aesthetic, often described as "casual wear," has since defined Hilfiger's designs. His target audience was young people embracing a fun lifestyle. His signature colors—white, blue, and red—reflected the American flag. His garments bore the Hilfiger label, emphasizing sportiness, youth, and lifestyle as key themes.
During the 1980s, Hilfiger's fashion primarily attracted middle-class Americans, while also gaining popularity among young African Americans, who were included in his advertising campaigns. From the 1990s onward, he based his style on the East Coast college look, transforming it into a sporty appearance. By 1990, the Hilfiger brand had $25 million in sales. In 1992, Hilfiger took his company public. He was named Designer of the Year for men's fashion in 1995 and received the Fifi Award along with other honors recognizing his success. Over time, Hilfiger became a prominent and influential fashion designer. By 2000, his company generated approximately $200 million in sales.
Hilfiger expanded his collections to include apparel for women, men, and children, featuring tailored suits, underwear, and casual sportswear. His patriotic style spread to Europe and Germany. Additionally, he launched a product line of accessories, including watches, which grew increasingly significant. In 2005, Hilfiger sold his company to the investment firm Apax Partners for $1.6 billion. On December 12, 2008, he married former model Dee Ocleppo, and they have a son named Sebastian Thomas. From his first marriage to Susie, Hilfiger had four children: Alexandria, Richard, Elizabeth, and Kathleen. In March 2010, the fashion group Hilfiger was acquired by Phillips-Van Heusen for approximately 2.2 billion euros.
