Biography

Renowned author Bernard Malamud was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1914. He studied at the City College of New York (CCNY) and Columbia University, earning an M.A. in 1942. After graduating, he spent most of the decade teaching high-school English before accepting a position as Professor of English at Oregon State College.

Malamud published his first novel, "The Natural," in 1952, which was later adapted into the successful 1984 film of the same name, though it initially received little attention. His second novel, "The Assistant," released in 1957, achieved significant sales and brought him widespread recognition. In 1959, he received the National Book Award for fiction. During the 1960s, he gained prominence amid growing interest in writers exploring Jewish traditions and experiences in America; in 1964, he was inducted into the National Institute of Arts and Sciences. His subsequent novels, "A New Life" (1961) and "Idiots First" (1963), met with mixed reviews, but his 1967 novel, "The Fixer," earned him both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. It was also adapted into a successful 1968 film. From 1966 to 1968, Malamud served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard University.
