Biography

Michael Polley, an Anglo-Canadian actor, is primarily recognized for his connection to actress-director Sarah Polley, his late wife Diane Polley's daughter. Born in England, Polley studied acting in the 1950s, with classmate Albert Finney likening the craft to bricklaying.

After emigrating to Canada, Polley settled in the Toronto area and performed on stage. He married Diane MacMillian, and together they had four children, including actor Mark Polley and producer John Buchan. Sarah was born when they were both in their forties.

While supporting his family as an insurance agent, Michael remained involved in acting. When Sarah's career blossomed, he supported her by serving as a guardian on sets, including a small role in Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). He is best known for his recurring role as the town doctor on his daughter's TV series Avonlea (1990).

Michael's relationship with Sarah was featured in her 2012 documentary, Stories We Tell.
