Biography

Thomas Burke, a British essayist and novelist, was born in London in 1886. His father passed away when Thomas was an infant. He lived intermittently with various relatives and spent four years in an orphanage. After finishing school at 15, he held several jobs, but his passion was always writing, selling his first story at 16. He worked for a used-book dealer and later at a literary agency. A publisher, impressed by his privately published poems and anthologies, commissioned him to write a book. Burke produced a series of sketches about London life titled "Nights in Town," followed by a collection of short stories called "Limehouse Nights." This book achieved significant success, leading to commissions from both British and American publishers. He wrote across multiple genres, including short stories, essays, novels, poems, and even songs. His most famous work is likely the short story "The Chink and the Child," which was adapted into the successful film Broken Blossoms by D.W. Griffith in 1919 and remade in 1936.

He passed away in London in 1945 at the age of 58.
