Biography

Alexander Mitta, a Russian film director and screenwriter, was born on March 28, 1933, in Moscow. His career in directing and screenwriting extended from the 1960s through the 2010s.

After studying engineering in 1955, Mitta worked as a cartoonist for art publications and magazines. He graduated from the film directing faculty at VGIK in 1960.

Seeking to push genre boundaries, Mitta explored the Western catastrophe genre adapted to Soviet realities. This experiment proved successful, with millions watching his film Air Crew (1980).

In 1983, he directed the notable film The Story of the Voyages, featuring Andrey Mironov and Tatyana Aksyuta.

In 1991, Mitta directed the Soviet-British political drama Lost in Siberia, starring Anthony Andrews. The film received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 49th Golden Globe Awards.

His final film, Chagall-Malevich (2014), released in 2013, portrayed the world of Marc Chagall and his myth through the lens of a folklore ballad. Among his notable later works is the TV series Granitsa. Tayozhnyy roman (2000).
