Biography
Darryl was born in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, to Joseph and Doreen Scheelar. In 1971, his family relocated from British Columbia to the Yukon, where Darryl first discovered his passion for performing through school plays. In 1977, he played the Artful Dodger in a community production of Oliver. During his time in the Yukon, he was also introduced to gymnastics.
Before starting 11th grade, Darryl's family moved back to the Vancouver area, settling in New Westminster. He continued acting in high school plays, and in his senior year, a member of the Shasta Trampoline Team discovered him while he was playing on diving boards at a nearby pool.
Over the next six years, Darryl dedicated countless hours to trampoline and tumbling training, representing Canada at three World Championships as part of the National Team. After retiring from competition, he performed trampoline shows across Canada and the United States at circuses and fairs, and landed his first film role in a 1988 Canadian commercial for Chevron gasoline.
In 1992, John Wardlow, coordinator for the television series Highlander, sought an acrobat capable of flipping with a sword, leading him to Darryl. The two quickly became close, with John mentoring Darryl in the stunt industry for television and film. Soon after, Darryl revisited his early passion for acting, beginning to audition for numerous productions filmed around Vancouver.
As his career progressed, Darryl performed stunts doubling many lead actors for film and television while maintaining his acting pursuits. He often remarked, "I'm building an acting resume now, so when I get too old and don't want to hit the ground anymore, I'll have something to do." By the late 1990s, he expanded into stunt coordinating and continues to work actively in acting, stunt performing, and stunt coordinating.
