Biography

Frank S. Nugent was an American screenwriter renowned for his work with director John Ford. Despite having only 21 feature films to his credit, his impact on cinema is extensive and enduring. During his career, Nugent earned two WGA Awards for Best Written Comedy for The Quiet Man (1952) and Mister Roberts (1955). He also penned two films in Ford's acclaimed "Cavalry Trilogy," and his screenplay for The Searchers (1956) has been recognized by the WGA as one of the 101 greatest screenplays ever written. It is fair to say that Nugent's writing influenced every western film that followed.

Nugent started his career as a film critic for The New York Times, gaining a reputation for his harsh reviews of popular films. Producer Darryl F. Zanuck took note of his critiques and hired him as a script doctor. After refining several scripts, Nugent met John Ford—whom he admired—and they chose to collaborate, initiating one of Hollywood's most successful writer-director partnerships. Nugent continued writing for Ford over several decades, producing some of the director's most iconic and acclaimed movies.
