Biography

Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay was born on September 7, 1920, in Bajrajogini, Dacca (now Dhaka), as the fifth of ten children to a Bengali Brahmin couple, Paresh Chandra Mukhopadhyay and Tarubala Devi. He graduated in commerce from Hooghly Mohsin College, then affiliated with the University of Calcutta. His debut story, Nurse Mitra, appeared in the newspaper Basumati and was later adapted into major films, including the Bengali Deep Jwele Jai and the Hindi Khamoshi. His novels also inspired Bollywood films such as Safar (1970) and Bemisal.

His first novel, Swaha, was published in Basumati and later retitled Ruper Hate Bikikini. Although Kaalchakra was his first published novel, he gained prominence with his fourth, Chalachal, especially after its successful film adaptation by Asit Sen in 1956. The 1957 adaptation of Panchatapa by the same director further boosted his reputation.

In 1955, Mukhopadhyay joined the newspaper Jugantar after trying and leaving nine different jobs, eventually becoming the head of the newspaper’s Sunday special. He passed away on May 4, 1989.

Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay stands as one of the most frequently adapted authors in Bengali literature. Numerous films have been based on his stories and novels, many of which have been translated into other Indian languages. Themes of love, romance, and human relationships are central to his works.
