Biography

Attractive, pipe-smoking South African-born singer and actor who gained peak popularity in Britain during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Lotis started his entertainment career at the age of nine after winning a talent contest, followed by several stage performances and radio singing. After finishing school at fifteen, he briefly worked as a bus conductor and electrician before moving to England with a letter of introduction to bandleader Ted Heath. He became a regular vocalist with the Heath orchestra in the early 1950s, often performing ballads that were especially popular with female audiences. His musical style spanned jazz, pop, and rock 'n' roll.

As a solo artist from the mid-1950s, Lotis recorded numerous albums for Decca, Pye Nixa, and Columbia, frequently appeared on BBC radio, toured the variety circuit, and performed at the London Palladium. His singing career reached its height in the 1960s with regular appearances on TV pop shows such as Six-Five Special (1957) and Dial for Music (1959). He also acted in several films, including Horror Hotel (1960) and Sword of Sherwood Forest (1960). Facing changing musical trends that impacted his career by the decade’s end, Lotis transitioned into running a restaurant and antique shop in Tring, Hertfordshire. He made a brief nostalgic return to performing in the 1980s.

Lotis was married to South African singer Alexandrena Maie (Rena) Mackie (1929–1997). After her death from cancer, he remarried and relocated to North Norfolk, where he died aged 97 on February 8, 2023.
