Biography

Christopher Morley was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania, in 1890. His father taught mathematics at Haverford College. As a child, Morley was an avid reader. He graduated from Haverford and received a Rhodes Scholarship, allowing him to study at New College, Oxford. While there, he published his first book, a collection of poems. After returning to the United States, he began working at Doubleday in 1913. His debut novel, "Parnassus on Wheels," which told the story of the first bookmobile, was successful both in the U.S. and abroad, followed by "The Haunted Bookshop." In New York, he contributed to numerous magazines and served as a contributing editor for "The Saturday Review." Morley earned the respect and loyalty of his colleagues and continued to publish short stories, plays, poems, and novels, many of which, including his children's stories, remain in print. The film adaptation of his novel "Kitty Foyle" (1939) starred Ginger Rogers, who won an Academy Award for her role. Dalton Trumbo adapted the screenplay and received his first Oscar nomination for the film. Morley had a profound admiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels and founded an appreciation group called "The Standard Doyle Company." Known for his wit and worldliness, Morley was also regarded as gentle and kind. He once said, "Cherish your happy moments; they make a fine cushion for your old age." He passed away in 1957.
