Biography

Dr. William Moulton Marston uniquely combined diverse interests into an enduring concept. Born and raised in Massachusetts, he earned a law degree in 1918 and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University in 1921. Fascinated by scientifically proving innocence, Marston invented the systolic blood-pressure test, which became the foundation for the polygraph machine. Advocating for broader use of the lie detector in criminal cases, his research led him to believe that women were more honest and trustworthy than men. This conviction made him an early feminist, promoting the idea that women embodied a peaceful societal force. In 1940, DC Comics publisher Maxwell Charles Gaines invited Marston to join an educational advisory board. Dissatisfied with stereotypical male superheroes, Marston proposed the creation of a female superhero. Gaines supported the idea and encouraged Marston to develop the character. In 1941, Wonder Woman debuted, credited to Charles Moulton, a pseudonym derived from Gaines and Marston's middle names. The character quickly gained popularity and soon headlined her own comic series. Marston worked on Wonder Woman until his premature death from cancer in 1947. The legacy of Wonder Woman endures.
