Biography
Katya Wyeth was the daughter of Rex Wyeth, an English solicitor, and a German mother who was a ballerina. She received her education in Essex, England, and Hamburg, West Germany. Inspired by her mother, Katya initially trained as a ballet dancer at the Theatre Royal, Windsor. However, her height of 5'9" eventually hindered her ballet career, leading her to pursue modeling and acting instead.
She spent several years in repertory theatre, performing with the National Youth Theatre, and appeared in productions during the late 1960s, including Dear Charles and Rabelais at London's Roundhouse in 1971. Katya also worked as an assistant stage manager and understudy, acted in a German film, and appeared on German television.
Although she had a brief appearance on BBC Television in 1964 in a play filmed at the Ashcroft Theatre, Julius Caesar (1964), Katya's British screen career truly began in the late 1960s. She initially used the name Katherina Wyeth before adopting the stage name Katya Wyeth in 1969, which she used throughout her acting career. Her television credits include appearances on Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969), The Avengers (1961), The Goodies (1970), The Sweeney (1975), and Space: 1999 (1975). She also hosted the game show The Sky's the Limit (1971), presented by Hughie Green.
Katya's film work includes horror movies such as Hands of the Ripper (1971), Twins of Evil (1971) alongside Peter Cushing, and Burke & Hare (1972). She appeared with Malcolm McDowell in the 'Ascot fantasy' sequence of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971).
As the 1970s advanced and the British film industry declined, many roles available to UK actors were in low-budget exploitation films. Katya appeared in two such films: Confessions of a Window Cleaner (1974) and I'm Not Feeling Myself Tonight (1976). Her final screen role was in No. 1 of the Secret Service (1977), a James Bond parody directed by Lindsay Shonteff, which surprisingly spawned two sequels.
In her personal life, Katya was married to actor Michael Bangerter from 1971 until his passing in 2016. The couple had two children, a son and a daughter.
