Biography

Jean Holloway, originally named Gratia Jean Casey and born in San Francisco, developed an interest in radio writing after winning a poetry contest upon graduating from San Jose State College. Starting in the late 1930s, she contributed to several well-regarded syndicated programs, including "The Kate Smith Show" and "The Hallmark Radio Hall of Fame." In the mid-1940s, she was signed as a screenwriter by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, working on projects such as the popular musical biopic Till the Clouds Roll By (1946). After describing her three years at MGM as "miserable," Holloway left the studio to pursue her goal of writing drama for television. While working on the pioneering daytime soap The First Hundred Years (1950), she met actor Dan Tobin, who would become her husband.

In the mid-1950s, Holloway adapted the popular radio show Mayor of the Town (1954) into a TV series starring Thomas Mitchell and Kathleen Freeman. The sitcom aired 39 episodes over a single season before cancellation. She then wrote episodes across various genres, including numerous installments of Wagon Train (1957), before creating The Ghost & Mrs. Muir (1968), based on R.A. Dick's novel and starring Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare. Holloway penned the pilot and wrote about 50 episodes of the series. Although set in Maine, 'Ghost' was filmed in Santa Barbara, California; the featured Gull House cottage was not near a beach. Despite developing a cult following over time, the series lasted only two seasons due to strong competition in its time slot. Holloway continued writing for television steadily until retiring in 1983. She passed away six years later in Santa Monica after suffering a stroke.
