Biography

Ben Hardaway, an animator, gag writer, storyboard artist, and director, is fondly remembered for his significant contributions to Warner Brothers cartoons and as the co-creator (with Walter Lantz) and voice actor (1944-1949) of Woody Woodpecker. Hardaway began his career as a cartoonist for the Kansas City Star in 1910. He served as an artillery sergeant under Captain Harry S. Truman during World War I, where he earned the nickname "Bugs." After the war, he returned to work for various Midwestern newspapers. In 1922, Hardaway joined the Kansas City Film Ad Company and became closely acquainted with pioneering animator Ub Iwerks. When Iwerks moved to Hollywood, he hired Hardaway as a story writer in 1931. Hardaway remained there for two years before a brief stint at Disney. He ultimately settled at Leon Schlesinger’s Warner Brothers animation studio, which offered artists considerably more creative freedom.

Hardaway’s sharp humor and satirical writing—exemplified by works like Confederate Honey (1940), a hilarious parody of Gone with the Wind (1939) featuring Elmer Fudd as “Nett Cutler” courting “Crimson O’Hairoil”—quickly elevated him to head of the story department. He also served as co-director on several Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies episodes during Friz Freleng’s three-year tenure at MGM, many starring Porky Pig. One such episode, Porky’s Hare Hunt (1938), featured an unnamed white rabbit created by Robert Clampett, who bore no resemblance to Bugs Bunny and behaved more like Daffy Duck. The rabbit reappeared in Hare-um Scare-um (1939), now in familiar colors but with shorter ears and prominent buck teeth, still sounding like Daffy. Hardaway wrote the name "Bugs" on a corner of the model sheet containing Charles Thorson’s original drawing, and the name stuck. The iconic rabbit officially became Bugs Bunny after the release of A Wild Hare (1940). After Freleng returned from MGM, Hardaway was demoted and subsequently left Warner Brothers to lead the story department for Walter Lantz, working on Andy Panda and Woody Woodpecker cartoons.
