Biography
Neil is a seasoned communicator and dynamic team leader, adept at engaging platforms, financiers and talent across the independent sector. He plays a key role in identifying bold, original ideas for the local and African storytelling landscape, with expertise spanning development, production, and distribution.
A multi-award-winning filmmaker and producer, Neil works fluidly across genres, cultures, and time zones. He is a founding partner and CEO at Storyscope, a talent-driven studio championing authentic African narratives that explore personal and political revolutions, challenge stereotypes and expand perspectives.
Neil is the lead Producer of "Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star", Netflix's first African true-crime series, launched globally in 2022. His latest series, "Free at Last: Unresolved Stories of Apartheid", a co-production with ARTE/ZDF, VPRO, and SABC, premiered at the Human Rights Film Festival in March 2025.
With degrees in Economics and International Law from the University of Cape Town, Neil has long been at the forefront of content entrepreneurship and media advocacy. His work spans fiction and nonfiction, with productions across Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, broadcast on Netflix, Amazon, ARTE, VPRO, Sundance Channel, CBC, BBC, PBS, ZDF, FX, NHK and Al Jazeera.
He has produced over 15 features exploring personal and political revolutions, winning dozens of global awards. His 2018 film "Whispering Truth to Power" won the Special Jury Prize at Hot Docs, while "Influence" won Best SA Film at Durban International, and premiered in competition at Sundance 2020. In 2021, he produced "The Ghosts of Gadaffi", filmed on both sides of Libya's civil war. In 2014, Neil co-produced "One Humanity", which brought to life the history of the global Anti-Apartheid Movement.
Neil has been a regular contributor to Al Jazeera Witness and Artscape, and EPs CGTN's Faces of Africa series, producing 50 × 30-min films across Africa.
He has produced over 200 hours of highly rated scripted TV, including "Keeping Score" (SABC2), "Emoyeni" (SABC1), and "Hustle" (eTV), as well as indie features like "Ugugu No Andile", "Chemo Club", and "Taste of Rain".
Neil is a team leader in the design of strategic communications for global advocacy clients including UNICEF, the EU, National Treasury, DIRCO, and the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children.
Neil is committed to industry advocacy, transformation and development, serving on the boards of DFA and SASFED, and has previously on the IPO and Durban FilmMart. He is a juror for the International Emmy Awards.
