Biography
Simon Sinn was born in Hong Kong and relocated to Canada in the early 1970s. He began his acting career relatively late, not stepping into the field until he was 30. At that time, he worked as a stock and commodity futures broker in Calgary. To broaden his exposure and client base, Simon approached a community cable TV station and persuaded them to introduce a financial segment in their weekly one-hour Chinese live show, which he would script and present. After his screen test, the station was impressed and encouraged him to take on additional roles such as hosting, news reading, interviewing, acting training, drama performances, and documentary production.
Upon moving to Toronto in the late 1980s, Simon recognized the potential of "Hollywood North." He quickly connected with talent agent Lorraine Wells, with whom he worked for over 30 years until her retirement in 2019. Simon’s first feature film role was a principal part in *Guilty As Sin*, directed by the late legendary Sidney Lumet. He also appeared in *Where The Truth Lies* (feature) and *Virtual Hitman* (short), both of which premiered at film festivals including Cannes (*Where The Truth Lies*). Despite his passion for acting, Simon continued trading financial markets, viewing acting as a cherished hobby to help relieve the occasional stress from trading.
In 2017, Simon left trading to focus more on acting and was soon cast in the Netflix comedy *Murder Mystery*, which took him to Montreal and Santa Margherita, Italy. In April 2023, he attended the Canneseries Film Festival in Cannes, France, where his web series *Streams Flow from a River*, filmed the previous summer, had its international premiere. Two months later, the series won Best Script, Best Direction, and Best Cinematography in the Jury Mentions category at the Valencia Indie Film Festival. *Streams Flow from a River* is available on Canada’s Super Channel and Prime Video Channels.
Though successful in his career, Simon remains grounded and values his early experiences in community television in Calgary as some of the most important in his acting journey. The live, fast-paced, challenging, sometimes improvisational weekly shows, combined with guidance from theatre-trained veteran actors, provided excellent hands-on training. Like all actors, Simon has had his share of memorable bloopers.
