Biography
Trey Edward Shults was born in Houston, Texas. He made his directorial debut in 2010 with the short film Mother and Son, which he also wrote, edited, and produced. The film starred Krisha Fairchild and Lucas Quintana. Between 2011 and 2012, Shults worked as a film loader, post-production intern, and intern on three Terrence Malick films: Song to Song, Voyage of Time, and The Tree of Life. At that time, he was studying business management but left school to focus on filmmaking and self-study. In 2011, he wrote, directed, produced, and edited another short film called Two to One, starring Krisha Fairchild.
In 2014, Shults directed, wrote, produced, edited, and acted in the short film Krisha, featuring Krisha, Robyn, and Billie Fairchild, all family members. The following year, he expanded Krisha into a feature-length film, which premiered at South by Southwest in March 2015 and won the Grand Jury Award. The story was inspired by a real incident involving Shults's cousin, who relapsed during a family reunion. The film was acquired by A24 and released in 2016.
In March 2015, Shults signed with William Morris Endeavor. He also worked as a camera production assistant on the 2016 film Midnight Special.
