Biography

New York City native Bobbito García is a freelance creative who has left a lasting impact on numerous urban movements.

In the 1990s, the iconic radio personality co-hosted the “Stretch and Bobbito” show on WKCR. This duo introduced listeners to unsigned artists like Nas, Biggie, and Wu-Tang Clan, as well as emerging stars Jay-Z, Eminem, and the Fugees. The combined record sales of artists who debuted on their show surpass 300 million. In 1998, Source Magazine named them “The Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time.” As a pioneer of sneaker journalism, García wrote the influential Source article “Confessions of a Sneaker Addict” in 1990 and authored the critically acclaimed book Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987 (Testify Books) in 2003. In 2005, ESPN’s “It’s The Shoes” series, hosted by Bobbito, became the first broadcast show dedicated to sneaker culture. A former professional basketball player in Puerto Rico, García appeared in the groundbreaking Nike “Freestyle” commercial. In 2007, Nike released seven Air Force 1 sneakers co-designed by him, each bearing his name. Known as the voice of EA Sports’ popular NBA Street video game, García is also a renowned DJ who has performed World, Soul, and Jazz music at venues such as Lincoln Center, Central Park SummerStage, and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
