Hannu Salonen is a globally recognized, award-winning film and television director celebrated for his compelling storytelling, precise visuals, and emotionally impactful narratives. Born in Finland, Hannu's filmmaking journey has been deeply influenced by his exposure to diverse cultures and viewpoints. After completing his education at Northbridge High School in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, he returned to Finland to study at Helsinki's esteemed Kallio High School of Performing Arts. In 1993, he enrolled at the Berlin Film Academy (DFFB), where he graduated with his debut feature Downhill City (1999), featuring Franka Potente. Over the last twenty years, Hannu has crafted an eclectic portfolio including crime thrillers, historical dramas, and dark satires. His hallmark is blending cinematic sophistication with daring, genre-blurring narratives. Projects like Netflix's Oktoberfest Beer & Blood, the Nordic Noir series Arctic Circle, and I Am Scrooge, the true-crime tale of Arno Funke, showcase his ability to infuse intensity, subtlety, and a distinct European flavor into his work. His latest series, Shadowtower (Turmschatten), delves into themes of moral justice through a gripping psychological thriller, while Vienna Game, a historical satire for Disney+, reinterprets the turmoil and diplomacy of post-Napoleonic Europe with sharp wit and lavish style.
