Biography

He initially studied sociology at UNAM but left in 1965 to pursue cinematography at the University Center for Cinematographic Studies (CUEC). Among the first two student cohorts of this institution were filmmakers such as Raúl Kamffer, Jorge Fons, Marcela Fernández Violante, Juan Guerrero, Alfredo Joskowicz, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, and Bojórquez. He graduated in 1970. Like many filmmakers of his era, he began his career creating short documentaries for public institutions and corporate videos for companies.

He directed the Cine Club at the Faculty of Political Sciences at UNAM and contributed to several student newspapers. Between 1965 and 1970, he coordinated the Film Clubs at the National Polytechnic Institute. In 1990, he worked as a commentator on film and opera for Radio 690’s program Qué hay de bueno.

He became a member of the General Society of Writers of Mexico (SOGEM) on July 31, 1972. In 1983, he taught scriptwriting at the Latin American Institute of Educational Communication (ILCE). In 1993, he served as a juror for the National System of Scholarships for Art Creators under the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CNCA). He was a Fellow of the National System of Art Creators from 1994 to 1997. From 1995 to 1996, he was President of the Award Commission of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Sciences and Arts; Secretary of Finance for the Union of Film Production Workers; and Secretary of the Interior for the Union of Film Directors.

His independently produced feature film The Months and the Days (1971) earned him the Ariel Award for Best First Feature, second place in the First National Contest of Scripts and Arguments by SOGEM, and the Francisco Pina Goddess award from PECIME for his contribution to Mexican cinema. In 1977, he won the Silver Ariel for Best Script for The Best of Teresa. In 1980, he received the Silver Goddess from PECIME for best script of the year for Portrait of a Married Woman. In 1983, he secured second place in SOGEM’s National Script and Plot Contest for Carlota. In 1993, he was honored with the Yucatan Medal for his cultural contributions as a native of that state. In 1995, the Directors Section of the Film Production Workers' Union awarded him a Medal commemorating 25 years as a director, along with other distinctions.
