Biography
Sérgio Graciano has built an extensive career in film and television. His debut feature film was "Assim Assim" (2010). He spent two years in Angola, overseeing fiction at Semba Comunicação, where he directed "Njinga - A Rainha de Angola" (2013), the most-watched Angolan film to date. This film earned two awards at the African Film Academy. He then directed "Uma Vida à Espera" (2016), which won the Audience Award at the 8th FESTin - Festival de Cinema Itinerante de Língua Portuguesa. In 2017, he directed "Perdidos," a remake of "Armadilha em Alto Mar," the third most-watched Portuguese film that year. In 2018, he co-directed "Bloodlines" with Manuel Pureza. During 2020 and 2021, he directed "The Impossibility of Being Alone" and "The Sound That Goes Down to the Earth," the latter becoming a finalist for Portugal’s Oscar submission in 2021 and receiving nine nominations from the Portuguese Movie Academy. In 2022, he directed "Salgueiro Maia - O Implicado," also a finalist for Portugal’s Oscar selection and the third most-watched Portuguese film of the year.
In television, Sérgio Graciano's achievements include winning the International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela with "Laços de Sangue" in 2011, as well as two Portuguese Authors Society (SPA) Awards for Best Fiction Television for "Conta-me como foi" (2011) and "O Último a Sair" (2012). Additionally, "Maternidade" (2013) and "País Irmão" (2018) received SPA nominations for this category. He served on the jury for the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' North American competition in 2015, 2020, and 2021. Sérgio directed the series "Daughter of the Law" for RTP, which is exclusively available on Amazon Prime in the U.S. Over the past two years, he has directed six series: "A Generala" for OPTO and GloboPlay, "Chegar a Casa" for RTP and Amazon Prime, "A Rainha e a Bastarda," "Auga Seca" for RTP and HBO MAX, "Da Mood" for RTP, and recently "Codex 632," the first major Portuguese production for GloboPlay.
His latest feature film, "O Meu Jardim," is currently in post-production. He is also preparing his next feature, "Os Papeis do Inglês," with Leopardo Filmes, a production company led by Paulo Branco, one of Europe’s top producers who has collaborated with David Cronenberg, Raúl Ruiz, and Manoel de Oliveira.
