Biography
Mickey O'Brien is a neurodivergent, working-class London Irish creative whose talents span music, visual arts, and acting. Nominated for Best Score in The British Short Film Awards 2022, she is a self-taught composer, abstract painter, and metal sculptor, known for blending innovation with emotional depth in her multidisciplinary work. As someone with synesthesia, she experiences a unique sensory perspective that informs her artistic endeavors. She is also a member of a global research group as a "super-recogniser," recognized for her photographic memory and exceptional ability to recall details.
A classically trained pianist, Mickey also explores innovative soundscapes using field recordings and sampling techniques. As a touring musician with Grammy award winning La Roux for over a decade, she performed on some of the world's most iconic stages, headlining festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella, and appearing on numerous TV shows and global tours. Her contributions to La Roux helped solidify the band's place in contemporary music history.
After dedicating several years as a full-time carer to her elderly father-sacrificing her flourishing arts career-Mickey turned to acting as a form of escapism. During this transformative time, she discovered a natural talent for performance. Within a year of taking classes, she was approached by an agent and cast in her first independent film, set to be released in 2025.
In addition to her artistic achievements, Mickey hosts a cerebral culture and music show that brings together a dynamic array of guests, from political leaders, such as the leader of the Green Party of England & Wales, to scientists, actors, musicians, writers, explorers, environmentalists, and activists. The show has also spotlighted grassroots movements, charities, and the creative expressions of schoolchildren, demonstrating her commitment to amplifying diverse voices.
A multidisciplinary artist with an unorthodox journey, Mickey continues to create, innovate, and inspire while championing inclusivity and the value of lived experience in the arts.
