Biography
Cathy Berberian was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, to Armenian parents who soon moved to New York. At Columbia University, she studied opera, voice and diction, stagecraft, pantomime, and radio writing under Milton Smith, Herbert Graf, and silent screen and stage actress Gertrude Keller. In 1949, she traveled to Milan to attend the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi, where she trained vocally under Giorgina del Vigo. This mentorship was pivotal, as Berberian retrained her voice as a mezzo-soprano and explored a wide chamber music repertoire that showcased her voice’s versatility and texture. While seeking a pianist for her Fulbright audition, she met Luciano Berio (1925–2003), then a composition student and vocal accompanist at the Conservatorio. They married on October 1, 1950, and settled in Milan, where Berberian received her Fulbright award and lived for the remainder of her life. Their daughter Cristina was born on November 1, 1953. Although their marriage ended in 1964, their professional collaboration thrived throughout the 1960s, producing groundbreaking vocal works that remain central to the repertoire: Circles (1960), Epifanie (1959), Visage (1961), Folk Songs (1964), and Sequenza III (1966). Berberian was a passionate advocate for contemporary music, performing new compositions worldwide at concerts and festivals. She also delivered nuanced interpretations of works by Monteverdi, Purcell, Stravinsky, and Debussy, and frequently included music by Weill, Gershwin, The Beatles, salon and cabaret songs, and traditional folk tunes in her recitals. In 1966, she composed her first musical piece, Stripsody for solo voice, followed by the piano work Morsica(t)hy in 1969. Berberian’s reputation as a new music recitalist was cemented after her 1959 performances at the Darmstadt Music Festival in Germany. She became a muse for numerous composers who created works specifically for her, including Bruno Maderna, Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Sylvano Bussotti, Henri Pousseur, and William Walton. Cathy Berberian passed away at age 57 on March 6, 1983, after suffering a massive heart attack in Rome. She was scheduled to appear on Italian National Television the next day to mark the centennial of Karl Marx’s death, planning to perform the Communist Party anthem “Internationale” in a Marilyn Monroe style. Berberian was the most celebrated vocal recitalist of her era. Her significant contributions to postwar music remain widely recognized, and her influence continues to be highly esteemed.
