Biography

Tom Brookshier, a former NFL defensive back and longtime broadcaster, is best remembered for his work with CBS Sports during the 1970s and early 1980s. Known for his sharp wit and energetic presence, he became one of the defining voices of the NFL’s television rise, especially through his partnership with Pat Summerall on CBS’s lead broadcast team.

Brookshier spent his entire professional playing career with the Philadelphia Eagles (1953–1961), earning two All-Pro selections and starting on the Eagles’ 1960 NFL Championship squad. Renowned for his toughness and football intelligence, his playing days were cut short by injury, but he quickly moved into broadcasting, bringing the same competitive spirit and edge to the commentary booth.

Joining CBS in the mid-1960s, Brookshier rapidly became a key figure in their NFL coverage. His enthusiastic, conversational style complemented Summerall’s more restrained delivery, making them one of the most popular broadcast duos of the 1970s. They were the familiar voices of NFL Sundays, covering numerous playoff games and major regular season contests.

Brookshier served as color commentator for Super Bowl X and Super Bowl XIV alongside Summerall on CBS. His skill at adding personality, humor, and insight helped define the tone of football broadcasts during the NFL’s surge in national popularity. Off-air, he was known for his charisma and occasionally candid demeanor, making him a memorable and sometimes controversial figure in the booth.

After leaving national broadcasting in the early 1980s, Brookshier stayed active in media and local radio, continuing to be recognized as one of the pioneering personalities who brought professional football into American homes.

Tom Brookshier’s legacy lies not only in the games he played and called but also in shaping televised football into an authoritative and entertaining experience—a formula that became the foundation of modern NFL commentary.
