Biography

You might not immediately recognize his name, but you've undoubtedly heard at least one of Johnny Marks's Christmas songs. As the brother-in-law of Robert L. May, who created the original "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" story, Marks was the one who composed the music for it. After unsuccessfully pitching the song to artists like Bing Crosby, Marks finally found a supporter in singing cowboy Gene Autry. Autry's 1947 Columbia recording of the song became the biggest hit of his career, making both men—and May, who owned the story’s rights—very wealthy.

Soon after, Marks established his own publishing company, St. Nicholas Music, and began producing a series of beloved Christmas classics: "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" (a beautiful adaptation of the Longfellow poem), "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Run, Rudolph, Run," "A-Caroling We Go," "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The last two were featured in the iconic 1964 TV special "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," for which Marks composed the score. He also wrote a popular non-Christmas song, "Anyone Can Move a Mountain."

Johnny Marks passed away in 1985 at age 75, but as long as Christmas is celebrated, his name and music will endure.
