Biography

Keith Beckett was a prominent British light entertainment television producer who, over more than thirty years, attracted numerous star names to Thames TV and London Weekend Television (LWT).

Born in 1929, he initially trained as a classical dancer and performed lead roles with the Festival Ballet. However, his true passion was comedy, leading him to leave dance and pursue a career as a variety artiste. One of his early mentors was variety producer Alfred Black.

Beckett began his television career at Tyne Tees TV, producing The One O'Clock Show hosted by Sheila Mathews. He gained widespread recognition as the producer of the talent show Opportunity Knocks!, the TV successor to stage shows like Bryan Michie's and Carrol Levis's Discoveries. The programme, hosted by Hughie Green and featuring a mix of light entertainment acts, stayed at the top of the TV ratings for over twenty years and became one of television's most enduring shows.

After Thames TV cancelled Opportunity Knocks!, leaving Green reportedly devastated, Beckett continued to direct major variety specials. He produced six one-hour specials with Bruce Forsyth and one-off shows starring Janet Brown, Mike Yarwood, Shirley Bassey, and Freddie Starr.

His production credits also include Hollywood or Bust and Name That Tune, and he served as a guest producer on several Benny Hill shows, which he particularly admired.

Recognized as a master of the variety genre, Beckett was an inspiration to many younger television performers.
