Biography
Liz was raised in Bebington, England, where she lived until enrolling at Nottingham University in 1990 to study law. After earning her LLB in Law, she volunteered at a law centre and became an advocate for civil rights for disabled individuals both in the UK and internationally. It wasn't until 2000 that she began acting, co-founding the comedy group Nasty Girls. In 2003, Liz studied performing arts with Graeae Theatre Company and London Met University, playing the title role of 'Mother Courage' in their final touring production. She then participated in the first Disabled women's reading of 'The Vagina Monologues,' performed on the main stage at The Young Vic Theatre in London in another Brecht play, 'The Exception and the Rule,' and toured the following year with Graeae's production of Moliere's 'George Dandin.'
Liz's initial role with the BBC was as a columnist for the website Ouch!, before becoming co-host, alongside American Horror Story actor Mat Fraser, of the well-known Ouch podcast. In 2005, she joined the comedy group Abnormally Funny People, making her stand-up debut with them, which was filmed for a Sky TV documentary. She was a finalist in the 2006 Funny Women competition and runner-up in the 2007 Hackney Empire New Act competition. Liz has brought six shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, two to the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and has toured globally with her comedy, cabaret, and one-woman show 'It Hasn't Happened Yet.' She wrote the book and lyrics for 'Assisted Suicide The Musical,' which she performed to sold-out audiences at the Royal Festival Hall, London, in 2016 and 2017.
On screen, Liz is best known for her role as forensic examiner Clarissa Mullery in the BBC's long-running drama Silent Witness (1996), starring alongside Emilia Fox, David Caves, and Richard Lintern. She joined the series in 2012, narrowly securing the role after almost missing the audition due to traffic delays. This was Liz's first television acting role, and over seven series, her character Clarissa evolved from a supporting role to a key member of the regular cast.
