Biography

Writer, musician, and film producer best known as one of the nation's top practical jokers. Four years after graduating from Ohio State University, Abel orchestrated his first major hoax in 1959 by creating the "Society for Indecency to Naked Animals." He convinced actor Buck Henry to play the Society's president and appear on television advocating for the diapering of farm animals to maintain decency. Other notable hoaxes by Abel included him and his wife Jeanne campaigning for a nude postage stamp featuring Jane Fonda, promoting a fictitious Sex Olympics, and tricking the media into believing that General Idi Amin was secretly having an extravagant wedding at New York's Plaza Hotel. Abel and his wife consistently succeeded in deceiving both the public and the press.
