Biography
Howard Wexler was born and raised in Hollywood, California. During his youth, he participated in the Boy Scouts, played the saxophone, and enjoyed taking still photographs.
After watching the 1964 film The Professionals, which was shot by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Conrad Hall, ASC, Howard immediately decided to pursue a career as a Director of Photography.
He attended USC Cinema and then interned under Mario Tosi, Director of Photography. Howard worked across Europe for various film companies as a camera assistant, driver, projectionist, and copywriter for English-language advertisements. Following a year with a Munich-based camera rental and film production company, where he also photographed parts of the 1972 Olympic Games, he returned to Hollywood. There, he assisted several renowned DPs, edited multiple projects, and launched his DP career on low-budget features, starting with a 2C inside a blimp. To date, he has been credited as Director of Photography on over 70 features.
Howard has also filmed numerous educational, documentary, and corporate projects, as well as second unit work, aerial footage, and title sequences. He co-produced two features for 21st Century Inc. In 1992, he produced, directed, and photographed the romantic comedy feature Loving Lulu, which premiered exclusively on HBO and received favorable reviews in Variety. In 2009, he directed and co-produced the sci-fi feature Infection: The Invasion Begins, which was acquired by Moving Pictures Film and TV and sold to Morningstar Entertainment for exclusive North American DVD distribution.
His feature and MOW credits include Reform School Girls, Angel 111, Arizona Heat, Banzai Runner, Intimate Power, Echoes of Enlightenment, Hope Ranch, The Real Deal, and seven films as DP for producer/director Andy Sidaris, such as Hard Ticket to Hawaii and Return to Savage Beach. Howard is recognized for his quick setup of cameras and lighting and is considered one of the fastest Directors of Photography in the industry.
