Biography

Rebecca O'Brien has worked as an independent film producer for thirty-five years. Before becoming a producer, she gained experience in various production roles, including serving as location manager on MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE (1985) and production manager on several early Channel 4 films.

She has produced fourteen feature films directed by Ken Loach, such as LAND AND FREEDOM (winner of the European Film Awards, 1995), SWEET SIXTEEN (recipient of the European Critics' Award 2002 - Prix FIPRESCI), MY NAME IS JOE (1998), and LOOKING FOR ERIC (2009). In 2006, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY and in 2016, I, DANIEL BLAKE both won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. THE ANGELS' SHARE (2012) received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. She also produced Ken Loach’s notable archive documentary THE SPIRIT OF '45 (2013), which explores the post-war period in Britain when the first socialist government was elected, establishing the National Health Service, the Welfare State, and nationalizing key industries.

In addition, she has produced films by other directors, including BEAN (directed by Mel Smith, 1996) and PRINCESA (directed by Henrique Goldman, 2001). Rebecca O'Brien currently serves on the UK Film Industry Training Board and the British Screen Advisory Council. She co-manages the production company Sixteen Films alongside Ken Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty.

She became a member of the European Film Academy Board in 2013.
