Biography

James B. Allardice was born in Canton, Ohio, to parents James and Lula Allardice. He attended the College of Wooster, where he collaborated with James Wise to write musicals; Wise later created the Broadway musical "Dames at Sea." During World War II, Allardice wrote the play "At War with the Army." After the war, he studied playwriting at Yale, where "At War with the Army" was first staged. The play premiered on Broadway in 1949 and was subsequently purchased by Paramount. This led Allardice to move to Hollywood to work on the film adaptation. Although Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin had appeared in two earlier films, "At War with the Army" (1950) was the first movie to feature them as the leading comedy duo.

In the early 1950s, Allardice wrote original hour-long dramas for television shows such as _General Electric Theater_ (1954) and _Lux Video Theatre_ (1950). He later transitioned to writing for variety shows, including _The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show_ (1956) and _The George Gobel Show_ (1954), winning an Emmy Award for Best Comedy Writing in 1955 for the latter.

While working on _The Ann Sothern Show_ (1958), Allardice met composer Tom Adair, and the two soon began writing sitcoms together, including _Hogan's Heroes_ (1965), _My Three Sons_ (1960), and _The Munsters_ (1964). Allardice is perhaps best remembered for writing the introductions for _Alfred Hitchcock Presents_ (1955), which were delivered by Alfred Hitchcock himself. He penned the lead-ins for all 359 episodes and contributed many of Hitchcock's speeches over their decade-long collaboration. In 1966, Allardice died of a heart attack at age 46, the same year _Alfred Hitchcock Presents_ concluded its ten-year run.
