Biography
María Rosa García was born in 1978 in San Fernando, Cádiz. She is the youngest of five siblings and the only daughter of José García, a military man, and flamenco singer "La Pastori" García.
Her stage name, "Niña Pastori," originated because she was the sole female among four older brothers and was called "la niña." She was also known as "la única hija de la Pastori" (the only daughter of La Pastori), and when she performed, people would say, “va a cantar la niña de la Pastori” (La Pastori’s girl is going to sing). Initially, her stage name was "La niña de la Pastori," but she later shortened it to "Niña Pastori."
She began her artistic journey at a young age, singing in Andalusia. At six, she performed alongside her mother in flamenco tablaos of "Barrio de la Pastora." A year later, she won first prize at a singing contest in the "El Chato" club in San Fernando, performing bulerías, a flamenco style, showcasing her talent despite her young age.
One of her early mentors was Camarón de la Isla, also from San Fernando, whose pure flamenco style influenced her initial work. Later, she incorporated a more commercial, pop-influenced sound while maintaining her flamenco roots. With the help of artists Paco Ortega and Alejandro Sanz, she produced her debut album, Entre dos puertos, at seventeen, selling over 150,000 copies and gaining commercial success. This success was partly driven by the hit single "Tú me camelas," popular in Spain during the summer of 1996. Since then, she has released ten albums and sold two million records.
