Biography
Recognized as one of Spain's most distinguished independent filmmakers, his work has garnered over a hundred awards and nominations globally, with selections at festivals including Berlin, Shanghai, Moscow, Karlovy Vary, AFI Fest, Edinburgh, Vancouver, and Sitges.
He received the Auteur Award from the International Press Academy—an honor previously awarded to prominent directors like Guillermo del Toro, Yorgos Lanthimos, Baz Luhrmann, and Robert Altman—at the 29th Satellite Awards in Los Angeles. Javier’s diverse filmography spans genres such as drama, horror, sci-fi, and thriller.
His debut short film, "Brasil," won top honors at the Sitges Film Festival, a leading international festival for fantasy and horror. That same year, Javier earned the Silver Melies for Best European Fantastic Short Film, the Golden India Catalina for Best Ibero-American Short Film, and the Universal Studios Film Master Award for Best European Director, establishing him as one of the most promising emerging filmmakers on the festival circuit.
Javier’s first feature, "Before the Fall," premiered in the Official "Panorama Special" section at the Berlin Film Festival. In Spain, it won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival, as well as Best Motion Picture of the Year at the TVE Miradas Awards. Following its North American premiere at AFI Fest, the film attracted attention from the US industry, ranking #3 on the Hollywood International Watchlist. That year, legendary director Wes Craven offered to remake "Before the Fall."
His second feature, "Rings," the third installment in "The Ring" series, was produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald for Paramount Pictures. Praised by Koji Suzuki, author of "The Ring" novels, "Rings" debuted at #2 at the US box office and grossed $83 million worldwide.
Javier’s latest film, "The Wait" (2023), premiered in North America at Fantastic Fest in Austin and has been showcased at numerous international festivals, including the 42nd Vancouver International Film Festival, 56th Sitges International Film Festival, 46th Moscow International Film Festival, 26th Shanghai International Film Festival, 42nd Bifff (Brussels), and the 30th Oldenburg Film Festival in Germany.
"The Wait" has earned 30 awards and 32 nominations to date, including Best Independent Film and Best Director at the Spanish Independent Film Awards, along with a nomination for Best International Picture at the 29th Satellite Awards. Its screenplay has been selected for inclusion in the Permanent Core Collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Library for study and preservation.
Javier is a member of the Directors Guild of America, the European Film Academy, and the Spanish Film Academy, and serves as President of Unfiled Films (USA).
