Biography
Alton Glenn Miller was born on March 1, 1904, in Clarinda, Iowa, to Lewis Elmer and Mattie Lou Cavender Miller. His musical journey began when his father gave him a mandolin, which he soon exchanged for an old horn. By 1916, he had switched to trombone. In 1923, Miller enrolled at the University of Colorado but left after a year to move to Los Angeles, where he joined Ben Pollack's band, spending much of his time performing and auditioning.
In 1928, Miller relocated to New York, where he played session gigs and arranged music. During this period, he studied under Russian musician and mathematician Joseph Schillinger, whose prominent student was George Gershwin. Miller applied Schillinger’s orchestration techniques to a practice exercise that evolved into the song "Moonlight Serenade," which brought him considerable financial success. In 1934, he joined the Dorsey Brothers' Orchestra for a year, then formed an American band for Ray Noble, debuting at New York’s Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center. The distinctive sound of his band was crafted through Miller’s orchestration techniques, including the use of the "crystal chorus" and other innovative arrangements.
Miller made his first recordings with his own band for Columbia Records on April 25, 1935. His instrumental "Solo Hop" reached the Top Ten that year, but he did not form an orchestra under his own name until March 1937. That initial band was unsuccessful, leading him to reorganize with different musicians in 1938. In 1939, Miller’s new band secured an engagement at the Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, NY, a prominent venue with radio broadcast capabilities. That year, he achieved seventeen Top Ten hits, including "Sunrise Serenade," "Moonlight Serenade," "Stairway to the Stars," "Moon Love," "Over the Rainbow," "Blue Orchids," and "The Man With the Mandolin," among other popular compositions and arrangements. In 1940, Miller had 31 Top Ten hits, followed by 11 more in 1941.
His number one hits included "Song of the Volga Boatmen," "You and I," and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" from his first film, *Sun Valley Serenade*. He collaborated with vocalists Tex Beneke, Ray Eberle, and the Modernaires featuring Paula Kelly. On February 10, 1942, Miller received the first-ever Gold Record for "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and added another 11 Top Ten hits that year, the first full year of U.S. involvement in World War II.
Despite being beyond draft age, Miller was eager to contribute to the war effort using his talents. After being denied a Navy commission, he joined the Army as a Captain. His final civilian performance took place on September 27, 1942. The Army assigned him to the Army Air Forces at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he first organized a marching band and then formed a large dance band featuring over two dozen jazz musicians and 21 string players. From January 1943 to June 1944, the Glenn Miller Army Air Forces Band performed hundreds of live shows and "I Sustain the Wings" radio broadcasts. Previously unreleased recordings from his civilian band also earned 10 Top Ten hits in 1943. In June 1944, Miller took his band to Britain, where they performed for Allied troops and appeared on radio shows. His last recording session, producing 20 new songs, occurred weeks before his death and was released in 1995.
Following the liberation of France, now-Major Glenn Miller aimed to bring his music closer to troops on the Continent and arranged for his band to be transferred to Paris. He planned to travel ahead to prepare for their arrival, but bad weather delayed his flight. On December 15, 1944, he accepted an invitation to join another officer on an unauthorized flight to Paris. Unaware of the pilot’s inexperience in winter flying and ongoing fuel-system issues with the small UC-64 "Norseman" transport plane, Miller boarded the aircraft.
The plane never reached Paris, and on December 24, 1944, the Army Air Forces officially declared Miller and the crew missing in action, presumed lost over the English Channel. In 1985, the British Ministry of Defence suggested that Miller’s plane was struck by a British bomb dropped by returning RAF pilots. Later research supported an alternative theory that the plane crashed due to fuel system icing in the cold Channel air. However, no wreckage, remains, or identification have ever been found, leaving the exact cause unknown. Glenn Miller was eventually declared dead, and at his daughter’s request, a memorial tombstone was placed in Memorial Section H, Number 464-A, on Wilson Drive in Arlington National Cemetery in April 1992.
