Biography

Neil Hollander was born on July 9, 1939, in New York City, NY. He is of German and Irish descent. Hollander graduated from the University of Washington and currently resides and works in Paris, France.

A writer, director, and film producer, Neil Hollander has authored several books, conducted interviews, and curated museum exhibits. Throughout his extensive career, he has taught at the University of Washington and worked as a journalist and war correspondent in Burma. He began his career traveling across the country as a reporter, writing about the places he visited. After nearly a decade on the road, Hollander shifted his focus to writing books and screenplays.

In the early 1980s, Neil Hollander and Harold Mertes embarked on a four-year global sailing journey to document the lives of people in various seaports. This project was captured in both written and filmed formats and stands as one of the last records of a fading era. The documentary "The Last Sailors: The Final Days of Working Sail," narrated by Orson Welles, is a 2.5-hour film telling this story. The accompanying book, written by Hollander, recounts his experiences with eight surviving sailing vessels and provides insights into the history, construction, and repair of boats.

Neil Hollander has written and directed multiple feature films and produced and co-directed "Nobel Voices," a collection of thirty-three interviews with Nobel Prize laureates, preserved as part of the institution’s heritage.
