Biography

Larry Hovis was born on February 20, 1936, in Wapato, Washington, and raised in Houston, Texas. He began his career as a vocalist, performing with his sister Joan Hovis before joining a quartet called "The Mascots," which appeared on Arthur Godfrey's "Talent Scouts" in 1948. While studying philosophy at the University of Houston, he signed with Capitol Records and recorded the album "My Heart Belongs to Only You." In the late 1950s, he moved to New York and appeared in Broadway productions such as "The Billy Barnes Revue" (1959) and "From A to Z" (1960).

In 1963, Hovis moved his family to California and performed stand-up comedy in local clubs. His first significant TV role came in 1964 with ten appearances on "Gomer Pyle: USMC." He also guest-starred in two episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show." Hovis secured a minor part in the pilot episode of "Hogan's Heroes" (1965) and was later cast as the demolition expert Sgt. Carter after two other actors left the show. While starring in this popular series, he continued writing television scripts and contributed to the hit comedy "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" (1967). In 1966, he penned the screenplay for the film Out of Sight.

Following the abrupt end of "Hogan's Heroes," Hovis appeared in numerous TV shows including "The Doris Day Show" (1968), "Adam-12" (1968), "Chico and the Man" (1974), "Holmes and Yo-Yo" (1976), and "Alice" (1976). He also produced several game shows and was a panelist on "Liar's Club" from 1976 to 1978. In 1993, he appeared in the feature film Shadow Force (1992).
