Biography

A playwright and screenwriter from Devon, England, Payne was born to Dudley Payne and Joan (née Landamore). He was educated at Denstone College and the now-closed Hornsey College of Art in London. After graduating in 1972, Payne started his career as a screen printer before progressing to scriptwriting for BBC4. His interest in crime fiction led him to write episodic screenplays for shows such as Lovejoy (1986), Midsomer Murders (1997), and DCI Banks (2010). Additionally, he penned twelve episodes of Minder (1979) and adapted two Dick Francis novels into television movies.

Payne gained prominence as the creator and chief writer of Pie in the Sky (1994), a beloved, uplifting detective series starring Richard Griffiths as Henry Crabbe. The show aired for five seasons from 1994 to 1997. Its central plot followed a reluctant, semi-retired police officer who preferred cooking and running his restaurant over detective work but was repeatedly coerced into solving cases by his politically driven, self-serving boss, Assistant Chief Constable Freddy Fisher, played by Malcolm Sinclair.

In recent years, Payne wrote several plays that received notable acclaim in France. These works were translated into French by actor and theatre producer Robert Plagnol and performed at the Theatre de Montparnasse (2007), the Theatre des Champs-Elysees (2008), and the Avignon Festival (2018).
