Biography

Marko "Marco" Tapani Hietala, born in Finland on January 14, 1966, gained recognition in Finnish music with his first band, Tarot, a project he formed with his brother Zachary, where he plays bass and serves as vocalist. They rose to fame with the hit single "Wings of Darkness" in 1986. Since then, he has been a member of bands such as Sinergy, Impaled Nazarene, and Delain. In 2002, he joined Nightwish after the departure of former bassist Sami Vänskä. Their first album together was "Century Child." His addition brought a subtle shift in style, incorporating powerful male vocals. Songs like "Planet Hell," "Wish I Had an Angel," "Slaying the Dreamer," and the cover of "The Phantom of the Opera" showcase his unique vocal range, blending elements of hardcore and opera. Since Tarja Turunen was dismissed from the band in October 2005, Hietala has remained the sole vocalist of Nightwish as of October 2006. The band has begun recording a new album and is searching for a new vocalist.
