Biography
Virginia Thompson, President of Vérité Films, is an acclaimed Executive Producer, Producer, and TV series creator with over 300 episodes of award-winning comedy, drama, children's, youth, documentary, and performing arts programming to her credit. She is best known for developing and producing Corner Gas, Canada's top-rated comedy franchise. Her notable projects include the upcoming children's animated series Jeremy and Tunebug, the internationally successful children's series Incredible Story Studio, the youth drama Renegadepress.com, the comedy series InSecurity, and Canada's Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. As President of Prairie Pants Distribution, she oversees all marketing and distribution for the Corner Gas franchise.
Virginia is Executive Producer and Co-Creator of InSecurity, a 23-episode narrative comedy for CBC. She gained widespread recognition as executive producer and key producer of the 107-episode hit comedy Corner Gas, developed alongside Brent Butt, David Storey, and Mark Farrell. Corner Gas was Canada's highest-rated scripted series from 2004 to 2009, earning nominations for an International Emmy, and winning six Geminis, six Canadian Comedy Awards, three Directors Guild Awards, six Writers Guild Awards, and a Gemini for Best Interactive for cornergas.com. Before Corner Gas, Virginia served as executive producer, producer, and co-creator of the 52-episode youth drama Renegadepress.com and the 65-episode children's drama Incredible Story Studio. Both series won multiple Geminis and received nominations for the Prix Jeunesse, a leading international children's television award. In 2007, Renegadepress.com was recognized by the Bell Fund as one of their "Top 10 New Media Groundbreakers."
Virginia began her television career working on some of Canada's most respected programs. A Ryerson University graduate, her first role was as a researcher on CBC's The Journal. She then spent five seasons working under mentor Linda Schuyler on the original Degrassi series. Virginia also freelanced as a writer and producer for W-FIVE, Canada AM, CTV News, and TVOntario.
Passionate about supporting emerging talent, Virginia mentors producers and writers, has served on the CMPA board of directors, and frequently conducts workshops for producers, writers, and aspiring TV creators at the Canadian Screen Training Centre, the CFC, NSI, and WIFT. In 2008, she received the WIFT Award for Creative Excellence in screen-based media.
