Biography
Emílio Domingos is a filmmaker, anthropologist, researcher, screenwriter, and producer. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). He holds a degree in Social Sciences from UFRJ, specializing in Visual Anthropology, Urban Culture, and Youth, and a master's from the Postgraduate Program in Culture and Territorialities.
As a director, his feature films include Black Rio! Black Power! (2023), which explores 1970s soul dances in Rio, and Chic Show (2023), focusing on the renowned black dance scene in São Paulo; Favela é Moda, which won the Best Documentary Feature Film by Popular Vote at the Rio Festival (2019); Deixa na Régua, recipient of the Special Jury Prize at the Rio Festival (2016); The Battle of Passinho, awarded the New Directions Exhibition at the Rio Festival (2012); and L.A.P.A., which won Best Film at the Câmera Mundo Festival in the Netherlands (2008). For television, he served as General Director of the series Enigma da Energia Escura with Emicida (GNT), also directing the episode Eu Falei Faraó - Cultura e Resistência.
As a screenwriter, beyond his own films, he authored Gilberto Gil Antologia Vol.1 for Canal Curta; the Netflix series Anitta: Made in Honório; the feature film Viva São João by Andrucha Waddington; the Amazon series Viajando com os Gil; the podcast No Passinho do Funk for Kondzilla/Spotify; the YouTube Originals series Abre Alas with Agnes Nunes; the Guided Tour video for Google's Black Awareness Month campaign; and the HBO series Romário, o cara.
Emílio has also worked as a curator for the International Ethnographic Film Exhibition and the Visões Periféricas Festival. As a researcher, he contributed to films such as Mistério do Samba, Viva São João, Pierre Verger, Sou Feia Mas Tô na Moda, and Santa Cruz; collaborated with directors including João Salles, Breno Silveira, and Lula Buarque de Hollanda; and worked on the TV Globo program Esquenta. Additionally, he was head of creation for the program É o Fluxo! on Multishow.
