Biography

Gertrude was born in New York City, where her father owned a summer resort hotel. As a teenager, she wrote dialogues about her father and grandfather, performing them for hotel guests. This marked the start of her writing career, which eventually led to her creation of "The Goldbergs." She married Lewis Berg, a British-born chemical engineer, and they moved to Louisiana to live on a sugar plantation for several years. Later, they returned to New York, settling in the same neighborhood where Gertrude had grown up. In her late twenties, she went back to college. During this period, a friend introduced her to a radio network executive, to whom she read one of her scripts. He was so impressed that he offered to produce the show as a radio series if she starred in the lead role. The show premiered in 1929 and ran until 1946, with over 5,000 scripts written. In 1949, "The Goldbergs" premiered on television, running for five years. Gertrude claimed to have produced more than 15 million words and performed in 10,000 shows during this time. Known for her modesty, she was widely loved and respected, yet meticulously documented her career in over 100 scrapbooks. She was considered as comforting and familiar as apple pie. Milton Berle described her as "Goodness personified," while actress Faye Emerson said she had "the face of a mother." Gertrude's career spanned stage, film, record albums, books, and live television.
