Biography

Kandi is best known as one of the lead vocalists in the highly successful 1990s R&B group Xscape. She sang lead on hits like "My Little Secret," "Just Kickin' It," and "Who Can I Run To," and wrote early hits including "Feel So Good" and "Can't Hang." Kandi is also celebrated as the songwriting mastermind behind TLC's 1999 No. 1 hit "No Scrubs," which won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. She received the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. Other notable songs penned by Kandi include Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills" and P!nk's "There You Go," among many others. She has written dozens of songs for artists such as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, *NSYNC, Monica, Alicia Keys, Boyz II Men, Faith Evans, Blu Cantrell, and more. In the late 1990s, as she emerged as a talented singer-songwriter alongside partners Kevin 'She'kspere' Briggs (rumored husband) and Tiny Harris (Xscape member and co-writer of "No Scrubs"), Kandi was hailed as a leading figure among a new generation of talented female behind-the-scenes artists, receiving widespread acclaim. She later released her debut solo album, "Hey Kandi," featuring the lead single "Don't Think I'm Not," which achieved moderate success. Despite the album's reasonable sales during its initial weeks, she was dropped by Columbia Records as a recording artist but continued writing songs for the label. Kandi returned to recording with her second album, "I Need," released through the independent label Upfront Records.
