Biography

Paul Bush (born 1956 in north London) is a British experimental filmmaker and animator. The son of classical composer Geoffrey Bush, he studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College under Michael Craig-Martin. He taught himself filmmaking while part of the London Film-Makers' Co-op.

Bush has created numerous short and medium-length films, including The Cows Drama (1984), His Comedy (1994), Rumour of True Things (1996), Furniture Poetry (1999), and While Darwin Sleeps (2004), among others. He has won awards at animation festivals in the Netherlands, Barcelona, Zagreb, Hiroshima, Bombay, Chicago, and various other locations worldwide. His website features excerpts from many of his films.

His works Furniture Poetry (1999) and While Darwin Sleeps (2004) bear a strong resemblance to Jan Švankmajer's 1967 animation Historia Naturae, Suita.

Besides directing and animating, Bush developed a technique showcased in several of his films, including The Albatross. This method involves scratching directly onto the surface of color film stock frame by frame over live-action footage, producing animated sequences that resemble traditional wood engravings. Since 2002, Bush has increasingly focused on time-lapse portraits and more conventional animation, including a collaboration with artist Lisa Milroy that resulted in Geisha Grooming (2003).
