Biography

Harry Chapin, a singer/songwriter and advocate for numerous charitable causes—particularly the fight against world hunger—remained undeterred by the often lukewarm critiques of his musical talents. His strong folksy persona earned him a loyal fanbase that has endured throughout his career and continues today. Born on December 7, 1942, in New York's Greenwich Village to a big-band drummer, Harry's musical passion emerged early. Initially playing the trumpet, he later switched to guitar and formed a homegrown musical group with his younger brothers, Tom and Steve Chapin, gaining popularity during the 1960s folk era. After a brief period at the Air Force Academy and studies in architecture and philosophy at Cornell University, Harry pursued filmmaking, directing the Academy Award-nominated documentary Legendary Champions (1968) about boxing legends. In the 1970s, Harry signed with Electra Records, releasing several albums that showcased his storytelling skills, including his first major hit, "Taxi," notable for being one of the longest songs ever played on the radio at that time. He also produced Broadway shows and wrote songs for his brother Tom's children's TV program, Make a Wish (1970). Subsequent hits included "Cat's in the Cradle" and "W.O.L.D." Committed to leveraging his fame for activism, Harry persuaded President Jimmy Carter to establish a Hunger Commission dedicated to eradicating world hunger. Alongside Bill Ayres, he founded World Hunger Year, vigorously championing the cause with Harry and his band performing nearly every other concert to support these efforts. Tragically, in 1981, Harry's life was cut short in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway while en route to another benefit concert.
