Biography

Michel Fagadau (born Mihai Făgădău, 1930 – February 10, 2011) was a French theater director and producer of Romanian origin.

He was born in Bucharest, but his family fled Romania during the war because of his father's antifascist activities. They spent two years in the Orient, where he began learning English. After the war, they settled in France. He completed his Baccalauréat there before moving to London to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. After just six months, he was hired by the Royal Shakespeare Company while continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Upon graduating in 1957, he remained with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he directed his first play, Marcel Achard's Voulez-vous jouer avec moâ.

In 1960, Fagadau took charge of the Théâtre de la Gaîté Montparnasse in Paris, a position he held until 1990. Later, in 1994, he became the artistic director of the Comédie des Champs-Elysées and Studio des Champs-Elysées.

A fan of Montgomery Clift and Elia Kazan, he passed away in Paris on February 10, 2011.
