Biography

Philippe Gildas, born Philippe Lepêtre on 12 November 1935, was a French journalist who passed away on 28 October 2018.

He began his career in 1962, eventually becoming the director of information at RTL radio. Adopting the pseudonym Gildas during his radio work, he joined French Public Radio and Television (ORTF) in 1969. In 1972, he was appointed editor-in-chief of ORTF until its dissolution in 1974. Between 1973 and 1974, he served as editor-in-chief at France Inter, then moved to Europe 1 from 1975 to 1986 as editor-in-chief and deputy director of information.

In 1985, Gildas started working at Canal+ as a director and launched the talk show Gildas Direct. He left the show in 1987 to lead Nulle part ailleurs, a comedic talk show blending humor with serious topics, with Philippe Risoli succeeding him on Gildas Direct. He received the 7 d'or award for Nulle part ailleurs in 1994 and 1997.

Gildas was promoted to president of CNews in 2001 following an agreement with Canal+. In 2007, he launched Vivolta, a TV network targeting Baby boomers. His autobiography, Comment réussir à la télévision quand on est petit, breton, avec de grandes oreilles?, was published in 2010. His last television appearance came in 2018 on the France Télévisions documentary La Télé des années 80: les Dix Ans qui ont tout changé.

Philippe Gildas died on 28 October 2018 after battling cancer and was laid to rest at Père Lachaise Cemetery on 5 November 2018.
