Biography
Monica, a Capricorn born on January 18, 1975, hails from the village of Chabbewal in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, India. Her father, Prem Kumar Bedi, was a registered medical practitioner, and her mother is Shakuntala (née Chawla). She has a brother named Bobby, who married a woman from Tanda near Hoshiarpur in 1998. In 1976, when Monica was just 10 months old, the Bedi family immigrated to Norway to start a garment business.
In 1992, Monica went to Oxford University in England to study English Literature. While there, she met Bollywood actor-producer Manoj Kumar. Soon after, she traveled to Bombay and encountered film producer Mukesh Duggal, who reportedly abused her; Duggal was later killed.
Through contacts associated with Abu Salem, Monica began her acting career, starting with a Telugu film. She returned to her hometown in 1995, during which time bandits attacked, killing her grandparents and severely injuring her mother. Shakuntala chose to live with her brother Krishan Chawla in Delhi rather than move back to Norway. Meanwhile, her husband, son, extended family, and sister-in-law Kanta relocated to Norway, leaving Kanta’s husband, Purshotam, to manage the property in Chabbewal.
Monica married Abu Salem, converted to Islam, adopted the name Fauzia, obtained two passports from Bhopal and Hyderabad, and together they moved from Dubai, UAE, to Lisbon, Portugal, in 2001.
Her troubles escalated when, a year later, both were arrested by Portuguese authorities. In November 2003, Monica was sentenced to two years in prison for possessing forged travel documents. After serving her sentence, Monica and Abu were extradited to India to face further criminal charges. In desperation, Monica wrote to the Indian President and Prime Minister, but received no response.
In September 2006, the Special Court of the CBI found Monica guilty of cheating, criminal conspiracy, and using a fake passport, sentencing her to five years of rigorous imprisonment. She is currently facing forgery charges related to the fake passport case in Bhopal.
Remarkably, none of her family in India knew of her situation until her arrest in Lisbon. Though no longer a star, Monica Bedi continues to garner media attention throughout India, with many fans and supporters hoping she will overcome her difficulties and return to the silver screen.
