Biography
Kevin Rene Richardson (born October 8, 1974), nicknamed "The Lion Whisperer," is a South African wildlife conservationist, YouTube personality, and self-taught sanctuary owner known for his work with African lions, black leopards, spotted hyenas, and striped hyenas.
Born at Nightingale Clinic in Johannesburg, South Africa, Richardson grew up in the Orange Grove neighborhood. His mother, Patricia, was employed by Barclays Bank and was South African-born, while his father, originally from Reading, Berkshire, UK, worked in the pharmaceutical industry. Kevin is the youngest of four siblings, including an older brother and twin sisters. His father passed away when Kevin was thirteen. Around age sixteen, he met Stan Schmidt and began developing his skills as a self-taught animal behaviorist.
Richardson attended college to study zoology but left after two years due to a curriculum focused mainly on marine biology rather than mammals. Initially, he believed working with animals would remain a hobby rather than a career. He pursued courses in physiology and anatomy, eventually becoming an exercise physiologist. At twenty-three, he started working as a handler for two six-month-old lion cubs, Tau and Napoleon, whom he later rescued. His early work took place at the Lion Park on the outskirts of Johannesburg, where he still interacts with the now fully grown lions. Rodney Fuhr, the park’s owner, gave him a part-time job to begin his journey.
Richardson and his team collaborate with the commercial filming industry and produce documentaries to fund their sanctuary. They also run a volunteer program that provides financial support and assistance in managing the facility.
He worked within a 650-hectare (1,600-acre) Lion Park in Broederstroom, located about 35 miles north of Johannesburg. Although primarily focused on lions, he has also engaged with hyenas and black panthers. The park, established with Rodney Fuhr’s help, spans 800 hectares (2,000 acres) and was created for the 2010 film White Lion. Richardson cares for thirty-nine lions at this site. As of 2011, the facility was private, with plans to open to the public. By 2020, the sanctuary’s website indicated it offered guided group tours and a volunteer program.
In 2015, the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary moved to Welgedacht Private Game Reserve near Pretoria.
Richardson has lived alongside, fed, and slept next to lions. He has also worked with cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas but prefers lions above all other big cats. His bond with these animals developed over time, having known every lion he works with since they were cubs. He continues to maintain a close relationship with Tau and Napoleon, the lion brothers who first introduced him to big cats.
